Are Disney World Resorts All Inclusive?

I didn't grow up going to Disney World, so imagine my surprise at the level of coordination it takes to actually visit! You have the hotels, the flights, the food, the shuttle from the airport, which hotel are you going to stay at, are you going to get Lightning Lanes and don't forget about the Guardians of the Galaxy virtual queue! It's exhausting! So it much better fits my brain to ask the question: "Are Disney resorts all-inclusive?" The short answer: No, no they are not, but it's a bit more complex than that.

Understanding what Disney has to offer in terms of accommodations, entertainment, dining, and other experiences is crucial for making the most out of your trip. While Disney resorts provide an array of inclusive experiences and packages, it's important to clarify what "all-inclusive" means in the context of a Disney vacation.

Understanding Disney Resorts and What They Offer

Disney resorts are well-known for their exceptional hospitality, themed accommodations, and magical experiences tailored for guests of all ages. Located in both Florida and California, as well as exceptional parks in China, Japan and France and mini-resorts in Hilton Head and Hawaii, these resorts include a variety of hotels, attractions, dining options, and entertainment venues. However, unlike traditional all-inclusive resorts you might find in the Caribbean or Mexico, Disney resorts are not fully all-inclusive. This means that while certain aspects of your stay might be bundled together in a package, not everything is included in the base price.

What Does "All-Inclusive" Mean at Disney?

The concept of an all-inclusive resort typically includes accommodations, meals, drinks, activities, and sometimes even transportation, all for a single upfront price so you can leave the wallet in the room and relax. At Disney resorts, you can create a vacation package that includes accommodations, theme park tickets, and sometimes dining plans, but additional costs will apply for other experiences and amenities. Pro tip: you will always, always need your wallet when Disney is involved.

Disney Vacation Packages: What’s Included and What’s Not

When you book a Disney vacation package through the Walt Disney Travel Company, you can customize your package to suit your family’s needs and budget. Here’s a breakdown of what you might expect to be included in a typical Disney vacation package, and what you should plan for as additional expenses.

Accommodations: Disney Resort Hotels and More

Disney offers a wide range of accommodations to suit various preferences and budgets, from value to deluxe resorts. For example, you can stay at the whimsical Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, a deluxe resort that immerses you in the beauty of African savannas, or opt for the more budget-friendly Disney's All-Star Music Resort. Other popular options include the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort (a points and miles favorite thanks to being official Marriott properties!) and the luxurious Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

Each resort provides themed rooms that bring Disney magic to life, such as rooms themed after popular movies like Finding Nemo or attractions like Space Mountain. Themed guest rooms can be a great way to enhance your family's Disney experience.

Theme Park Tickets: Entry to the Magic

Disney vacation packages often include theme park tickets, granting you access to one or more of the famous Disney parks: Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, as well as Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park in California. However, remember that the type of ticket included in your package will affect your experience. A base ticket allows entry to one park per day, while a Park Hopper ticket lets you visit multiple parks in one day.

This is important: there is an add-on feature you can staple onto your tickets referred to as "Lightning Lane." Formerly called "Genie+," Lightning Lane is an optional, additional per-person cost that allows you to skip the lines of some of the more popular attractions. There are two separate options: Multi-Pass and Single-Pass, and each have different uses and costs. Keep these in mind when you're budgeting your Disney trip, as these can be the difference between a great trip and just an OK trip.

Dining: Disney Dining Plans and Additional Costs

While Disney is not a traditional all-inclusive resort, 2024 reintroduced the Disney Dining Plans that can be added to your vacation package. These plans range from quick-service meals to deluxe dining options and can include snacks, meals, and even character dining experiences where you can meet beloved Disney characters.

However, it's essential to note that not all dining experiences are covered under these plans. Fine dining, alcoholic beverages, and certain specialty items like ice cream or snacks in some park areas might incur an extra cost. Planning ahead and understanding the dining options available can help you make the most of your Disney dining plan.

What’s Not Included in a Disney Vacation Package?

While Disney vacation packages are comprehensive, they are not entirely all-inclusive. Here are some things that typically aren’t covered:

- Travel Costs: Flights, rental cars, and other transportation costs to and from the resort are not included.

- Special Events: Events like the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival or after-hours parties at Disney’s Animal Kingdom often require separate tickets.

- Magical Extras: Experiences like spa treatments, golf courses, or behind-the-scenes tours come with additional fees.

- Travel Insurance: Travel insurance premiums are an optional extra that can protect your investment in case of unforeseen circumstances like illness or bad weather.

- Gratuities and Tips: For many dining and housekeeping services, gratuities are not included.

- Memory Maker: The Memory Maker is an optional add-on that allows you to download all photos taken by Disney photographers throughout your stay.

Disney Cruises: An All-Inclusive Experience?

For those looking for a more traditional all-inclusive experience, the Disney Cruise Line might be a great option. Disney cruises, like those on the older Disney Wonder or new Disney Wish headed to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, typically include accommodations, dining, entertainment, and many activities for children and adults. However, like Disney resorts, certain things, such as excursions, premium dining, and alcoholic beverages, are not included and will require an additional cost.

The Benefits of Booking Through a Travel Agent

Booking your Disney vacation through a travel agent, such as a Get Away Today agent or Mouse Counselors, can help simplify the planning process. Travel agents who specialize in Disney vacations have detailed information on the best deals, special offers, and inclusive packages that might not be widely advertised. They can also assist with coordinating travel dates, making theme park reservations, and recommending the best hotels for your needs.

Is a Disney Resort Vacation a Good Idea for Your Family?

Ultimately, whether a Disney resort vacation is a good idea for your family depends on your vacation preferences and budget. If you're looking for a destination that combines exciting theme park adventures, unique dining experiences, and luxurious accommodations, Disney resorts offer a great way to experience all of this and more.

However, it’s crucial to understand that while you can create a highly inclusive Disney vacation, Disney resorts are not fully all-inclusive in the traditional sense. By carefully planning and utilizing Disney vacation packages, dining plans, and other available options, you can craft a magical vacation tailored to your family’s desires.

Tips for Getting the Best Deal on Your Disney Vacation

To ensure you get the best deal on your Disney vacation, consider these tips:

- Book Early: Disney often offers discounts and special rates for those who book well in advance.

- Be Flexible with Travel Dates: Traveling during off-peak times or avoiding hurricane season can result in significant savings.

- Consider Multi-Day Tickets: Purchasing multi-day tickets often reduces the cost per day compared to buying single-day tickets.

- Look for Special Offers: Disney frequently offers special offers such as discounts on hotel stays or free dining plans when you book a certain number of nights.

- Use a Credit Card with Rewards: Some credit cards offer cash back or points for travel purchases, which can help offset some of the costs of your trip.

Conclusion: Crafting Your Perfect Disney Vacation

While Disney resorts are not all-inclusive, they offer a variety of inclusive packages and options that can make your vacation feel as magical and comprehensive as possible. By understanding what is included in a Disney vacation package and what will incur an extra cost, you can plan a memorable trip that fits your budget and expectations.

Whether you’re staying at one of the official Walt Disney World Resort Hotels or sailing away on the Disney Cruise Line, Disney provides countless ways to create unforgettable memories. With careful planning and the right approach, your Disney vacation can be the inclusive experience of your dreams, filled with the magic and excitement that only Disney can deliver.
