Disney adults, rejoice! As I've discovered over the last 10 or so trips to Orlando with my wife, Disney World isn't just for kids. In fact, for adults looking to embrace their inner child while enjoying upscale dining, thrilling rides, and exclusive experiences, Disney World offers a perfect getaway for a couple or a group!
This guide will show you how to make the most of an adults-only trip to the most magical place on Earth, ensuring you have a great time without the pesky children.
Why Choose an Adults-Only Trip to Disney World?
There are a few reasons why Disney actually makes a pretty good adults-only destination. Adults-only trips to Disney World offer unique experiences that cater to grown-up tastes and interests, especially when you have access to adult money. It's also got the same advantage as a cruise ship trip in that it's contained: everything you need is within the confines of the Disney World walls, complete with transportation, meals, booze, rides, whatever. If you're wealthy enough, you can even live within the walls of the House of Mouse.
Whether you're a Disney adult looking for an exciting escape, a foodie wanting to explore Epcot's culinary delights, or a thrill-seeker eager to ride the best roller coasters, Disney World has it all. Here’s your complete guide to planning the ultimate adults-only Disney vacation.
Saving Money at Disney World
Before we get started, it's worth noting that a lot of the activities below are...pricey. Disney has never been known for their frugal nature, and as such, a Disney World vacation is very, very expensive, with a recent report showing that the standard American family actually goes into debt to make it to the parks. Well, we wrote a comprehensive guide just for you around leveraging travel portals and credit card points for maximum value. You can find that article here, or search "Travel Hacking Disney Parks" on our blog.
Where to Stay: Best Disney Resorts for Adults
1. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: Known for its Victorian elegance and luxurious amenities, this deluxe resort is perfect for those seeking a pampered stay. Commonly referred to as the best Disney resort in the domestic parks, you can enjoy fine dining experiences at Victoria & Albert's or relax at the full-service spa, but beware that this is by-far the most expensive option on this list. This is really more for the elegant couples getaway, rather than a rowdy adult trip or bachelorette party.
2. Disney’s BoardWalk Inn: Speaking of "rowdy trip," here's your ideal for a bachelorette party or group of high-functioning alcoholics. With its waterfront placement and genuinely vibrant nightlife, this resort offers live entertainment and great dining options. The nearby Jellyrolls piano bar is a favorite spot for adults to unwind.
3. Disney’s Riviera Resort: Inspired by the elegance of the European Riviera, this resort provides upscale restaurants and beautiful views. This one is great for those planning a quick in-and-out hop to drink around the world at Epcot, as you can take the short Skyliner trip right into the park.
4. Animal Kingdom Lodge: For a unique experience, stay at this resort where you can view exotic animals from your balcony and enjoy African-inspired cuisine. Definitely the most unique on this list thanks to the actual animals living outside of the hotel, it's also the furthest from anything to do, and also has the most limited transportation options. It's also not a good pick if you have picky eaters in your group, as the African restaurants can be a stark departure to what they might eat at a theme park.
5. Coronado Springs Resort: This resort combines Spanish Colonial elegance with modern amenities, featuring beautiful lakefront views, a great health club, and fantastic dining options. It's a very large campus of a hotel, but if you're traveling with adults that have a bit of cash, you can upgrade to a room in the newly built tower that keeps you right in the middle of the action.
Best Disney Parks for Adults
While all Disney World theme parks offer something for everyone, certain parks stand out for adults-only trips. Here's my personal ranking:
1. Epcot: This should be the be-all-end-all of this list when it comes to a perfect adult trip to Walt Disney World Resort. Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival is a must-visit for any foodie, but the park is still pretty awesome at any time during the year. With wine tastings, food booths representing different countries, and upscale dining options, it’s a paradise for culinary enthusiasts. The World Showcase offers a cultural journey through various pavilions, perfect for a leisurely day. Pro tip: stop by the India booth during the Food and Wine festival and enjoy some genuinely great chicken tikka masala for cheap (not something you get to commonly associate with Disney World).
And then there's the classic "Drinking Around the World," where you can do your best Alex Morgan impression and try not to get kicked out after spending too much time in the Mexico pavilion testing their margarita menu. Finally, there's the absolutely incredible "Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind" ride, one of the newest to Walt Disney World, and my goodness. Do it. Just do it.
2. Hollywood Studios: This one is the top of the list for the theme-park goer in your life. With thrill rides everywhere you look, it's my wife's clear favorite park and a must-do for those that want to do Disney for Disney. Experience the thrill of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, including the incredible Rise of the Resistance ride. The park also offers exciting roller coasters like the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and plenty of live entertainment.
3. Magic Kingdom: While it’s often associated with young children, Magic Kingdom has plenty to offer adults. Enjoy the nostalgia of classic rides, take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park, and stay late for the spectacular evening hours fireworks display.
The one thing you won't commonly find here? Booze. Since this really is the park designed for children, you'll have to grab a sit-down meal to find an alcoholic drink, so it may not be your best bet for adult only days if that's your goal.
4. Animal Kingdom: This park is perfect for nature lovers. Don’t miss the Kilimanjaro Safaris for an up-close look at African wildlife (not to mention it's my personal favorite ride in all of Walt Disney World), and explore the immersive Pandora – The World of Avatar, home to one of the most incredible animatronics I've ever seen. You can also grab some decent food in this part of the park at Satu'Li Canteen, replete with green beer that's honestly pretty bad, but it's a fun gimmick.
Dining and Drinking: Best Restaurants and Bars
1. Victoria & Albert's (Grand Floridian Hotel): For an unforgettable fine dining experience, this restaurant offers a multi-course meal with impeccable service. This is the option on this list for the big spenders, since this is a prix fixe menu that clocks in at $295 per person, and does have a formal dress code (bring a sportcoat, gentleman!). However, reports are that this place is totally worth it, culminating in a Michelin star awarded in 2024.
2. Le Cellier Steakhouse (Epcot): Located in the Canada pavilion, this restaurant serves up some of the best food in Disney World, including mouthwatering steaks. Be aware that this is a candlelit, upscale steakhouse, so don't plan on rolling in in a tank top. While it's not as expensive as V&A, you'll still pay a few more dollars to grab a Canadian steak and a Molson's.
3. Nomad Lounge (Animal Kingdom): The perfect pit stop during your day at Animal Kingdom, Nomad Lounge is a great place to relax with a cocktail and small plates after exploring this outdoor safari. Sitting on the waterfront, the lounge is known for its small plates and inventive cocktails, but that's its key issue - it's known. This is a very tough lounge to get into, with guests frequently experiencing a wait to get in.
4. Tambu Lounge (Polynesian Village Resort): Enjoy tropical drinks and a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for a little bit of relaxation. The delineation between the lounge and the restaurant is key here. The restaurant frequently books up as one of the more popular places to eat in the whole of Disney World, but the lounge sits next door and is a walk-up where you can order the full menu. Be sure to try the noodles.
5. Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto (Polynesian Village Resort): This tiki bar offers creative cocktails and a fun, interactive experience. You have to plan ahead for this one. If you don't get there early, you will not get in. Be aware!
Activities and Experiences for Adults in Disney World
1. Disney Springs: This shopping, dining, and entertainment complex is a great way to spend an evening, and is truthfully my second favorite "park" on the complex. Enjoy upscale dining at places like The Boathouse or try wine tastings at Wine Bar George. In fact, we've ranked the top restaurants in Disney Springs, just for you.
2. Spa Days: Many deluxe resorts, including the Grand Floridian and Saratoga Springs, offer full-service spas for a relaxing retreat.
3. Special Events: Plan your trip around special events like Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, or the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon. Note that some of these do require extra ticket purchases for those events, and if you choose not to purchase, then you may be kicked out of the park early on these event days.
4. Nightlife: Enjoy late-night live music at Disney Springs, or visit the Atlantic Dance Hall at the BoardWalk. Since it's also a city with a major international airport, the actual city of Orlando has plenty to do downtown, from nightlife to bars to upscale dining that has your name all over it.
Tips for a Great Adults-Only Getaway
- Use a Travel Agent: A Disney travel agent can help you plan the perfect itinerary, secure hard-to-get reservations, and provide insider tips. If you're getting after sought-after experiences, this is the key.
- Stay on Disney Property: Staying at a Disney hotel gives you access to extra time in the parks and convenient transportation options. Is it more expensive? Definitely! But that's why you left the kids at home.
- Take Advantage of Evening Hours: Many parks offer extended evening hours for resort guests, allowing you to enjoy the attractions with fewer crowds. There are also after-park experiences you can plan your trip around if you're willing to pony up for an additional ticket.
- Explore Beyond the Parks: Don’t miss out on the other great places Disney World has to offer, like the golf courses, hot tubs at your resort, or the health clubs for a workout.
Making the Most of Your Disney Trip
Plan your days strategically to avoid long lines and maximize your time. Use Genie+, and the Individual Lightning Lane system, to skip the queues on your favorite rides, and take advantage of park announcements for the latest updates on special events and ride experiences. Always stay hydrated and take breaks to enjoy the beautiful scenery and unique Disney parks stuff.
