Which Disney World Park is Best?

The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is the ultimate destination for Disney fans, featuring four incredible theme parks (and two water parks that nobody talks about and Disney would like to keep it that way) that each offer unique magic, thrills, and unforgettable moments. However, with options like the enchanting Magic Kingdom Park, the cultural journey of Epcot, the cinematic magic of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the wildlife adventure in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, choosing the best Disney World park can be a challenge.

Affording to Travel to Walt Disney World

It would be lacking of me, as the owner of a travel website dedicated to lessening the impact of travel on your wallet, to not take a second and outline the cost of a Disney World vacation.

We've spoken about this many, many times over the last 8 months, but Disney is expensive - and it's getting worse. In this recently published (and terrific) Wall Street Journal article entitled "Even Disney Is Worried About The High Cost of a Disney Vacation" by Robbie Whelan, the case is made that the cost of Disney is getting untenable.

The average cost of a mid-tier Walt Disney World vacation, according to the article, is 20% higher than the average annual vacation budget for the bottom 40% of American workers, a horrible referendum of where we are as a culture, but I digress. The move towards squeezing every ounce of juice out of this lemon called Disney Entertainment and Parks is in an effort to fund their streaming efforts over at Disney+, which is valued at a far higher multiple for Wall Street, which means it's the shortest route to a propped up share price for the House of Mouse.

As a result, Disney is upcharging for everything. Lightning Lanes (of which there are now three options), airport transportation, dining plans, photo passes and the like are squeezing the consumer. So what can you do about it? You can hack the parks. Take a look at our article about the latest and greatest in Disney World travel hacking with our guide on travel hacking Disney parks with credit cards, points and miles, then start planning your magical Disney adventure.

Overview of Each Walt Disney World Theme Park

Magic Kingdom Park

Magic Kingdom is the quintessential Disney experience. With the iconic Cinderella Castle at its center, this park is divided into six themed lands, including Adventureland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. Main Street, U.S.A., greets guests with a nostalgic, small-town charm, leading to a mix of beloved attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, and the newest ride to Orlando, Tron: Lightcycle Run.

Magic Kingdom is often considered the best park for guests looking for a traditional Disney experience and is perfect for visitors of all ages, especially those with young children. However, because families with young children are Disney's bread-and-butter, Magic Kingdom is the most expensive park when it comes to ticket price, frequently surging to over $200 per ticket during the busy seasons.

Epcot

My favorite of the four main Disney World parks, Epcot stands out for its mix of innovation and international culture. Divided into Future World and World Showcase, Epcot offers attractions that highlight technology, space exploration, and global culture. Future World is home to thrilling rides like Test Track (soon to be something else as Test Track has been closed since mid-2024) and the newish Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, while World Showcase features 11 pavilions representing different countries, each offering authentic food, drinks, and cultural experiences.

This park is ideal for guests interested in learning about the world, enjoying diverse dining experiences, and exploring both thrilling and educational attractions. Epcot is especially popular during festivals, like the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, adding even more excitement. It's also the most adult-friendly park, with plenty of booze options fit for even the zaniest of bachelorette parties.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

For film lovers and Star Wars fans, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a must-visit. The park has transformed over the years, with new lands like Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where guests can fly the Millennium Falcon and explore Black Spire Outpost. Hollywood Studios also offers exciting thrill rides like the Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, along with immersive experiences like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Hollywood Studios is the best choice for those who want to experience cutting-edge attractions and themed lands, especially fans of film, television, and interactive experiences. It's also the park ripe for expansion, with Disney announcing in 2024 that they will be reformatting huge swaths of the park. Gone are the days of Muppet Vision 3D and Dinosaur, entering a new era of Monsters Inc.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the largest of the four parks and offers a unique blend of adventure, nature, and immersive storytelling. From my favorite ride, the awe-inspiring Kilimanjaro Safaris, to the exhilarating Expedition Everest, this park brings the natural world to life. Pandora – The World of Avatar transports guests to a bioluminescent forest with attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage and the underwhelming Na'vi River Journey.

Animal Kingdom is perfect for families and guests who love animals and nature. It’s also the most relaxing Disney park, with beautiful landscapes and unique attractions for guests of all ages. This park is frequently the target of park hopping as there isn't a ton to do once you've seen the animals and grabbed yourself a green beer.

Which Disney World Park is Best for Different Interests?

Best Park for Thrill Rides

For thrill-seekers, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom are top choices. Hollywood Studios offers intense rides like Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in Galaxy’s Edge. Meanwhile, Magic Kingdom provides classic thrills with Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Tiana's Bayou Adventure, as well as Tron: Lightcycle Run, which is now the fastest ride in any of the four main parks.

Animal Kingdom also has a couple of heart-pounding attractions, including Expedition Everest and the immersive Avatar Flight of Passage. If thrills are your main reason for visiting, Hollywood Studios offers the widest selection, while Animal Kingdom provides a unique blend of thrills and natural beauty.

Best Park for Younger Children

For families with younger children, Magic Kingdom is often considered the best choice. With attractions like It’s a Small World, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and the many character meet-and-greet opportunities on Main Street, children can enjoy age-appropriate rides and attractions.

Epcot also offers some great experiences for children, especially in the World Showcase play areas and the Finding Nemo-inspired The Seas with Nemo & Friends. And if you have a Frozen-obsessed child in your life, it's hard to go wrong with the Frozen Ever After ride in Epcot. Just be prepared to stand in line (or pay through the nose for it!).

Best Park for Star Wars Fans

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a paradise for any Star Wars fan. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge brings the galaxy far, far away to life with interactive elements, shops, and attractions like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. From building a custom lightsaber to exploring the Black Spire Outpost, Hollywood Studios is the top destination for fans of the Star Wars universe.

Best Park for Food and Dining Experiences

If you’re a food lover, Epcot is the clear winner, thanks to World Showcase, where guests can savor food and drink from 11 different countries. From Mexican tacos to French pastries, there’s a wide variety of culinary delights to enjoy.

Animal Kingdom also offers unique dining options, particularly for those who want something beyond traditional theme park fare. Both Epcot and Animal Kingdom provide some of the best restaurants and quick service options across Walt Disney World.

Practical Considerations for Choosing the Best Disney World Park

Best Time to Visit Each Park

Planning around crowd levels is essential for a smooth experience. The best time to visit each park is during off-peak seasons, typically from January to early March or September to early December. My Disney Experience App can help manage reservations, view wait times, and plan around huge crowds.

Magic Kingdom often has the longest lines due to its popularity, while Epcot sees higher crowds during festivals. Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios can also get busy, especially with new attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy and Rise of the Resistance. Lightning Lane Multi Pass can be a great tool for managing wait times and getting access to popular rides.

Accessibility and Atmosphere

Each park has its own atmosphere, from the fairy-tale charm of Magic Kingdom’s Main Street to the futuristic look of Epcot. If you’re looking for a relaxing day with fewer crowds, Animal Kingdom tends to have a more laid-back atmosphere with lush landscapes and beautiful scenery.

Magic Kingdom offers the classic Disney feel, while Hollywood Studios is full of interactive experiences that transport you to the worlds of movies and TV. Epcot’s World Showcase provides a culturally immersive atmosphere that’s great for leisurely exploring and dining.

What Each Disney World Park is Best For

Magic Kingdom: Best for Families and Classic Disney Magic

With Cinderella Castle, classic attractions, and Main Street’s nostalgic charm, Magic Kingdom embodies the classic Disney magic. It’s the best park for families and younger children, but adults can enjoy the iconic rides and atmosphere as well.

Epcot: Best for Cultural Exploration and Dining

Epcot provides a cultural journey through World Showcase and futuristic experiences in Future World. This park is ideal for food lovers, couples, and guests interested in learning about different countries through food and entertainment.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Best for Thrills and Star Wars Fans

For fans of thrills and movies, Hollywood Studios is the perfect park. The cinematic atmosphere, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Toy Story Land make it a great place for older children and adults seeking immersive experiences.

Animal Kingdom: Best for Nature Lovers and Relaxation

Animal Kingdom is a unique blend of nature and adventure, perfect for guests who want to experience the natural world. It’s also an ideal spot for a more relaxing day, with scenic paths and animal encounters.

Conclusion: Final Thoughts on the Best Disney World Park Experience

Ultimately, there isn’t one best Disney World park—it all depends on what kind of experience you’re seeking. Magic Kingdom is ideal for families and classic Disney charm, Epcot is a paradise for foodies and cultural explorers, Hollywood Studios is perfect for thrill-seekers and Star Wars fans, and Animal Kingdom is the best choice for nature lovers.

No matter which park you choose, each Disney World theme park offers a unique experience filled with unforgettable memories and magic for guests of all ages.
